Scherenschnitte is the art of paper cutting. The word means "scissor cuts" in German. This craft was founded in Switzerland and Germany in the 1500s. As Germans and Swiss people immigrated to Colonial America in the 1700s, this craft came with them, particularly in the Pennsylvania area. This craft can be as complicated as the image above or as simple as cutting out a heart or a snowflake. It does not have to be complicated to be scherenschnitte!
Click on the picture above to view a video on making a scherenschnitte bookmark.
Then go to the Flanders Family Home Life blog and print out one of the templates on their website. Cut out the image and mount it on a piece of construction paper. Ta Da! You have now made a scherenschnitte bookmark!
If you do not have a copier at home, feel free to come to KCU's library and we will print a copy out for you!
