Art in the style of Seurat

Welcome to

Welcome to the virtual portion of our KCU/Carter County Public Library Summer Reading Program 2025!  This week we will begin to explore the art of French artist Georges Seurat.

Georges Seurat was born December 2, 1859 in Paris, France. He is considered to be a French post-Impressionist artist.  He devised two new painting techniques.  One of them was called pointillism.  In pointillism, small distinct dots of color are used in a specific pattern to create an image (From Wikipedia)He used this style to create his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.  This painting took him 2 years to complete and is 10 feet wide!  The multicolored dots of the painting allow the viewer's eye to blend colors rather than the artist blending the colors on the canvas.  Seurat also used conte crayon for drawings on paper with a rough surface.

Seurat died on March 29, 1891.  He was only 31 years old and the cause of his death is uncertain.  However, it is believed that his son died of the same illness just two weeks later.  Let's get started looking at pointillism!
