Our final stop on our vacation is the Brooklyn Bridge.  This iconic bridge opened on May 24, 1883 and is still in use today.  It was the first fixed bridge to cross the East River and at the time it opened, was the longest suspension bridge in the world.  It is a National Historic Landmark, a New York City Landmark, and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.  Start your tour of this site by clicking here to view a Youtube video from the Ted-Ed channel on the construction of the bridge.  Then click here to take a virtual walking tour across the Brooklyn Bridge on the Wind Walk Travel Tours channel on YouTube.  It could be a great excuse to buy new shoes!

Books to Read

Anna Katherine Green was an author who was born in New York City in 1846.  She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. Green has been called "the mother of the detective novel".  Here are two of her novels that are available for free on Project Gutenberg and Librivox.

That Affair Next Door

by Anna Katharine Green

From Goodreads: First published in 1897, That Affair Next Door is another fascinating study in human motivations intertwined with bits and pieces of circumstantial evidence that at first make very little sense. True to Green’s style, she calls up and explains each motivation, each piece of evidence with mathematical precision until the mystery unravels and the perpetrator is punished in a most fitting fashion.

Heading Home!

As our New York City Vacation comes to an end, we hope you continue to "visit" New York City through books, movies, foods, and sporting events.  Look for new places to "visit" and take virtual tours of other sites as time allows and be sure to share them with us on our social media channels.  Rest up until our next virtual vacation adventure coming in December!
