Plants

Botanical gardens bring many plants into one location so that you can see plants of many regions.  Europe has some wonderful botanical gardens!  We are going to look at three of them:

  • Royal Botanic Garden Kew in London, England
  • Orto Botonica Padua in Italy
  • Tromso's Arctic-Alpine Garden in Norway

Botanical Gardens in Europe

KEW GARDENS

The Royal Botanic Garden Kew in London is Europe's largest botanical garden.  It was established in 1759 and continues to grow and change.  Click on the image above to go to the virtual tour page for the garden.  You can explore different garden areas, different buildings and structures, and the garden in different seasons.  There is a lot to explore!

ORTO BOTANICA PADUA

The Orto Botanica Padua in Italy is the oldest botanical garden in Europe.  It was established in 1545. as part of the University of Padua.  It was created to provide for the cultivation of medicinal plants.  Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Click on the image above to get a tour and history of the gardens.  This tour is in Italian, so you will want to read the subtitles.

Once you have watched the video, visit the website for the Orto Botanico 1545.  The website will be in Italian.  If you are using the Google browser, it will ask you if you want the site to be translated to English.  If you are not fluent in Italian, we highly recommend that you click on the translation.  You can see individual plants or gardens.  They even have an insectivorous plants garden!  Enjoy the adventure!

TROMSO ARCTIC-ALPINE BOTANIC GARDEN

The Tromso Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden opened in 1994 and is located in Tromso, Norway.  It is the world's northernmost botanical garden.  It has no walls and can be entered at any time.  The garden shows Arctic and alpine plants from places in the northern hemisphere.
