Day 4 - Our Final Day of Superheroes

As we finish up our vacation, it is a good day to just read comic books and watch cartoons and movies as we get ready to 'head back to work'.  Remember to have fun as you relax today.  If you are a KCU alumnus, KCU faculty or staff person, or a KCU student (or will be a KCU student in Fall 2024) make a list of all of the comic books that you have read and send those to nenders@kcu.edu to put them on our Summer Reading Challenge List.  For each title that you email, you have your name placed in a drawing for one of 5 Amazon gift cards - a little vacation bonus!

More Public Domain Comic Book Heroes

All of our comics below are available at the Digital Comic Museum.  Just click on the linked character's name and go to the first issue of the comic. As you read the comic books, just look for the small numbers at the bottom of the page with the arrows to turn the pages.  There is no need to download in order to read the comic book.

When Gary Preston was a baby, his father worked as a missionary in China.  His father was washed away in a flood but Gary survived because his father placed him in a basket that was then washed downstream to Tibet.  Gary was rescued by a group of lamas who trained Gary in their mystical ways.  Gary became The Flame.  He has the ability to control fire and heat.  He can raise his body temperature until he bursts into flames or melts bullets and can control and direct any flame in his presence.  He can teleport from place to place by appearing inside of any fire source, no matter how small.  His one weakness is water, which can weaken him.

Samson is a direct descendant of the biblical Samson.  He has immense strength and endurance but loses his powers if his hair is cut.  However, his hair grows back much faster than normal.  He did not manifest his abilities until he reached college age.  That was when his mother told him about his ancestry.  When he graduates from college one of his friends, Professor Dunn, shows him a viewer that allows him to watch scenes from anywhere without a transmitter.  He sees an eastern holy man praying for someone to battle evil.  Samson visits the holy man and agrees to be that champion.

Red Mask is actually Tim Holt.  Tim Holt was a cowboy hero who wandered throughout the Old West fighting outlaws.  He came to the aid of Don Vincente Gomez, who was being threatened by the bandit El Terror.  Gomez told him of the legend of Red Mask, a hero from 100 years earlier that was like Zorro.  Red Mask helped the poor and oppressed.  Tim Holt decided to become Red Mask himself and continued to use this disguise against other foes.
