The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery is a 1959 heist file starring Steve MacQueen. He is a college dropout hired to be the getaway driver in a bank robbery. The movie is based on a 1953 bank robbery attempt of Southwest Bank in St. Louis. The film was shot in St. Louis and some of the men and women from the St. Louis Police Department, local residents, and bank employees, play the same parts as they did in the actual robbery attempt.
St. Louis style pizza is a great way to finish your day of Italian food! This pizza has a crust that is very thin and cracker-like that is made without yeast. The cheese used is Provel, which is a trademark for a cheese made of provolone, Swiss, and white cheddar cheese. The sauce typically has more oregano than most pizza sauces. The cheese is then cut into 3 or 4 inch squares which is called a party or tavern cut. Click on the picture below to try the recipe from Taste of Home!
Today we begin the day at the Missouri Botanical Garden and then move on to the Italian neighborhood, The Hill, at lunch. To end the day we will visit the Moto Museum. Let's get started!
The Missouri Botanical Garden was found in 1859. It is one of the oldest botanical institutions in the United States and is a National Historic Landmark. It is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It has more than 6.6 million specimens which makes it the second largest herbarium in North America. Click on the picture above to take a tour of the gardens. Enjoy the morning!
The Hill is located on high ground south of Forest Park. The Hill began with immigrants from Northern Italy, Germany, Ireland, and African-Americans who wanted to live near the railroad which connected the neighborhood to downtown. The vast numbers of Italians migrating to the area resulted in an Italian American majority population during the early part of the 20th century. As a result, it is referred to as the Italian part of town. Baseball players Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola, Sr. grew up on the Hill; their boyhood homes are across the street from each other. Four of the five St. Louisans on the US soccer team that defeated England in the 1950 FIFA World Cup came from The Hill.
