This guide provides quick reference for information covered in your Online Personal Librarian Meeting

Online Catalog

 

The Online Catalog provides information on resources that are available through the library.  This catalog contains listings for approximately 100,000 print titles and over 200,000 ebooks.

Young Library Catalogs are located under the "Research" tab in the left hand column of our web page.

To get to the catalog page:

1. Go to the library home page (https://www.kcu.edu/library/)

2. Click on "Research" in the left hand column

3. Click on "Catalogs" in the left hand column

You will now see two catalogs listed and linked on the page.

 The Online Catalog lists information on books and e-books that are owned by Young Library.  

 

Searching the Online Catalog

The Online Catalog is used to access resources owned by Young Library such as:

  • E-books
  • Print books
  • Streaming video
  • Streaming music

 

To filter for ebooks or print books, you will want to do the following:

1. Starting at the "Catalogs" screen.  Click on the red "Online Catalog" link in the center of the page

2. On the basic search screen look for the words "Advanced Search" under the Search button and click on them

3. Type in your search term or terms in the boxes at the top of the page, then move to the large center box below that is labeled "Material Type"

4. Scroll in the "Material Type" box until you locate "EBOOKS" or "PRINTED MATERIALS"

5. Return to the top below the search boxes and click on "Submit"

EBOOKS

Ebooks can be opened directly from the catalog.  Look for the words below the table for each entry and click on the link that says "Click here to view this resource online from...."

There are several platforms available in the catalog - JSTOR, Netlibrary, Palgrave, etc.  These are all electronic books but they will look different.  Some common things to locate are:

  • Search within boxes
  • Citation information boxes
  • a dictionary
  • Table of contents
  • Indexes

PRINTED MATERIALS

Printed Materials can be identified in our catalog as items having the "Book" icon as well as having a traditional Dewey decimal number in the Call # box for each result.

  • To check out a title and have it mailed to you - copy the information for the specific title from the result list including the call #.  Email that to nenders@kcu.edu.  In the email include your Name and mailing address where you would like the book to be sent.  Books must be returned with a trackable mailing number.  Books are checked out for 3 weeks at a time and can be renewed.
  • To see the Table of Contents or an Index of a book - copy the information for the specific title from the result list and email it to nenders@kcu.edu.  The pages will be scanned and emailed back to you as soon as possible.
  • To have specific pages of a book scanned - provide the specific title information from the result list with the page numbers that are needed.  These will be scanned and emailed to you as soon as possible.
