HOW TO FILTER FOR AN E-BOOK

How To Filter For E-books

The ebooks available in the Online Catalog are academic publications.  They can be used like print publications to answer your research question.

During your online personal librarian meeting, we opened a Netlibrary e-book.  We will do an example search here using the same type of e-book so that the searching will look familiar to you.  However, during your research process, please use any platform of ebook.  You will be looking for the same types of information

  • The ability to search within the publication for key words and phrases
  • A citation feature
  • A dictionary feature
  • A Table of Contents
  • An Index

Let's Begin:

  1. Go to the Catalogs page and click on "Online Catalog" in red in the center section of the page.
  2. Click on "Advanced Search" located beneath the "Search" button by the search boxes.
  3. Type in "Social Justice" in the top search box
  4. Move to the "Add Limits" area of the search screen and in the Material Type box, scroll down until you locate "Ebooks" and click on it
  5. Click on the "Submit" button located directly below the search boxes at the top
  6. On the results list, scroll down to Information Technology and Social Justice
  7. Under the table for that entry click on the phrase "Click here to view this resource online from NetLibrary"

USING AN E-BOOK

Your Ebook should now be open.

  • Look in the left hand column.  You should see "PDF Full Text" and below that "Download this eBook (Offline)
    • Downloading an ebook offline is the same as checking it out.  In general, you would want to use this feature if you are planning on reading the entire book cover to cover.
    • PDF Full Text allows you to open an ebook immediately and begin to use it.
      • In general, if you are only using the book to locate information on your topic, this would be the best choice to use.  It is quick and sufficient for locating the information within the book.
  • Click on "PDF Full Text"
    • Start by looking in the left hand column.  The information located there is your Table of Contents for that book.
    • The center column will contain the book, beginning with the front cover.  You can turn pages either by scrolling or by using the large blue arrows located at the bottom center of that column.
  • Look at the top of the page.  Immediately below the blue bar you will see the word "Contents" with a blue line below it.  From this word, all the way across the top of the screen is your toolbar that will be used to navigate within the book in order to retrieve the needed information.
    • Click on the phrase "Search within" on this toolbar
      • Type the word "internet" in the search box and then click on the magnifying glass at the end of the box.
      • The list that appears will be all of the pages where that word appears in the book.  It is essentially the index for your book.
      • Clicking on each page will take you directly to that page.  Then you can read the text to locate information on your topic.
    • Click on "Dictionary" on the toolbar
      • This will provide a search box any time that you would like to acquire a dictionary definition of a word that is not familiar to you.
    • Click on "Cite"
      • You can scroll down through the alphabetical listing to locate the citation format that you are using.  This can be copied and pasted into your Resources page of your document
      • All of these citations should be considered a starting point only.  You should double check the citation against the style manual recommended by your professor.
      • The Citation Help page of the library web page may be helpful to you in locating citation library resources.
      • Things to look at are capitalization, formatting, and punctuation.  Please see a librarian if you have any questions.
