Technology Helps

Technology Helps

Technology changes constantly.  We discovered these tools recently and thought that they might be helpful in completing your handout/brochure and your research paper.

Using these tools is optional.  My personal guideline for use is that if the technology is getting in the way of the content, then I go back to what I know until I have time to explore the tools on my own with less pressure.  I would encourage you to at least look at these tools at the beginning of the course so that your learning curve is lower when you get ready to use them.

I am happy to help you at any point. Please contact me with any questions that you have.

Technology Tools to help in completing assignments

Handouts & Brochures

  • An easy way to create a Handout or a Brochure is to use a template.  While many people tell you to use the program "Publisher", not everyone has this available.  Here are two alternatives that you can use.
    • Google Docs - One option is to use Google Docs.  We are a Google campus so your campus email allows you to access all Google tools.  One of these is Google Docs.  Open a Google Doc and at the top it will say "Template Gallery".  You can click on this and then scroll to the bottom of the list for the templates labeled as "Brochure".  This provides two template options.  If you do a Google search for "Brochure templates for Google docs" you will find additional templates that you can download and use.  The video on your left will also show you how to set up a tri-fold brochure template in Google Docs.
    • Word -  If you are more comfortable working with Word, there are also templates available on this site.  Open Word and in the search box above the template examples type in "Brochures".  Additional options will appear that you may select and use.
  • These templates are just starting points.  Feel free to adjust them and use them creatively to complete your assignment.

Readability Tool

  • In creating brochures or any information, it is important that the content is understandable by your user/reader.
  • Health.gov has provided a great tool that you can use to check and see if your brochure has an appropriate reading level.
  • Use the direct link https://www.webpagefx.com/tools/read-able/ or
    • Go to https://health.gov/
      • Click on "Health Literacy & Communication"
      • Click on "Resources" in the left hand column
      • Scroll down to "Usability" at the bottom of the page
      • Click on "read-able.com: The Readability Test Tool"
    • Copy and paste your document into the tool to discover the reading level.
