Kentucky Christian University's Young Library Great Lakes Lighthouses Virtual Vacation

A virtual trip in the Great Lakes area where you go on virtual tours of lighthouses and museums, read fiction and non-fiction materials about the area, explore local area favorite recipes, and watch movies about lighthouses.

Day 5 - Lake Erie

 

Lake Erie is the southernmost Great Lake.  It is also the shallowest and the smallest by volume.  It borders the US states of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.  The Lake flows out to the Niagara River and eventually to Niagara Falls.

FAIRPORT HARBOR MUSEUM AND LIGHTHOUSE We begin our tour of Lake Erie by visiting Fairport Harbor Museum and Lighthouse where the first lighthouse on this location was built in 1825. 


BARCELONA LIGHTHOUSE: The Barcelona Lighthouse is located in Barcelona, New York.  It was the first natural gas lighthouse in the country.  It was an active lighthouse until 1859.  In 2008, it became part of the Park service in New York and is registered as a National Historical place.  Even though the light is no longer used for navigation,the light continues to be lit every day.  Find out more from the video by clicking on the picture to your left.

 

PRESQUE ISLE LIGHTHOUSE - ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA :   This lighthouse was completed in 1873.  The original tower was 40 feet high, but in 1896 and additional 17 feet 4 inches was added.  Even though the tower is square, the interior of the tower is circular.  Click on the photo on your right to take a tour of the inside of this lighthouse!

 

 

DUNKIRK LIGHTHOUSE: This lighthouse was first established in 1826.  It was automated in 1960 and is still operational.  the first shot of the War of 1812 was fired near the west bank of the lighthouse.  Find out more by clicking on the picture on the left!

 

 

 

 

 

 

BUFFALO MAIN LIGHT/ LIGHTHOUSE: Buffalo Main Light / Lighthouse is at the mouth of the Buffalo River in Buffalo, New York.  It was established in 1833 and was constructed of limestone and cast iron.  It is a 60 ft tall octagonal tower.  It was deactivated in 1914.  Click on the photo on the right to find out more!

Rock Hunting:  Finish out the day with a relaxing walk along the shores of Erie and collect at least one more rock!  Watch the video in the left hand column to see the results of tumbling some of them!
