Day 6 - Lake Ontario

It is our final day touring around the Great Lakes.  Our final stop is Lake Ontario.  This is the only Great Lake to not border the state of Michigan.   Lake Ontario is important for its diversity of birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and plants.  Let's explore a few of its lighthouses!

OLD FORT NIAGARA: The history of Old Fort Niagara spans over 300 years.  It was particularly important during the Colonial wars.  It was a barracks   and training station for soldiers during both the First and Second World Wars.  Watch the video by  clicking on the photo to your left to find out more about this important landmark!

BRADDOCK POINT LIGHTHOUSE:  The Braddock Point Lighthouse was constructed and opened in 1896.  It's tower is an octagonal shape.  The lighthouse was in operation until 1954.  It is now serving as a Bed and Breakfast!  Click on the photo on the right to find out more about this lighthouse.

THIRTY MILE POINT LIGHTHOUSE: This lighthouse began operations in 1876.  It is located 30 miles North of the Niagara River which is why it is named Thirty mile Point. In 1995 the US Postal Service selected this lighthouse to represent Lake Ontario in a set of 5 stamps covering the lighthouses of the Great Lakes.  Click on the picture on the left to find out more about this lighthouse!

Books: James Fenimore Cooper set his book The Pathfinder on Lake Ontario.  The Pathfinder is one of 5 books that together are known as The Leatherstocking Tales.  The main character, Natty Bumpo, recounts events in his life between 1740-1806.  Many believe that this character is loosely based on Daniel Boone.  We have linked the entire series for you below.  In order they are: The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie.  Let us know what you think of them!

Food: Today may be the day that you overindulge.  You could try one of these dishes for lunch and one for the evening meal.  You will have to decide which one to eat when!  It is always a good to try Buffalo Wings when in Buffalo, NY.  Another Buffalo specialty is Spaghetti Parm.  Which is your favorite?!  Click on the photos below for recipes.
