LOCATING YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE

LOCATING YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE

Locating young adult literature for your students can be done by browsing library catalogs, book vendors such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble, and print catalogs for educators.  However, additional databases such as Novelist are designed for educators and do an excellent job of identifying genre and age level.

E-books are also used by many students.  You may encounter schools where Chromebooks are distrubted to all students and this gives you options that are free and electronic for your students to use.

Check out a few suggestions in the box below.

ONLINE RESOURCES FOR YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE

LibriVox (LibriVox) - LibriVox is a source for audiobooks that are available in the public domain.  It is not necessarily a starting point for identifying young adult titles, but it does help to identify titles for students that are struggling with reading or students that have IEPs that make audiobooks a better choice.

NoveList (NoveList) - NoveList is located under the subheading "Literature" on the Young Library database page.  This database provides descriptions of books for different age groups and in different genre types.  Help guides and tutorials are provided on this site.  Definitely a top choice in creating your list of literature!

Manybooks.net (Manybooks.net) - This web site contains free e-books that are in the public domain.  Each entry lists a Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease score.  The site also provides a blog.  Two of their recent blog titles were 8 Free Fantasy eBooks Used By Disney For Their Animated Films and 6 Free Classic Sci Fi eBooks About Mars. This is a great way to eliminate access issues.
