No Computer Solutions!

College is expensive and technology loaded.  Here are a few examples:

  • Registering for classes occurs online
  • Course information is available online in a course management system
  • Library resources are available online
  • Assignments are expected to be typed and submitted online
  • Some textbooks are available online
  • Campus emergencies and Coaches communicate by texts and emails

There are many more examples. Many of these issues can be solved with owning a personal laptop.  However, what are your options if you do not have a laptop computer, there is no laptop rental program  and you cannot afford to purchase one?  Try one of these options!

  1. Use the library - Young Library at Kentucky Christian University has a computer classroom and additional computers located at the front of the building.  Students are welcome to use these computers during operation hours.  Sunday through Thursday we are open until 10pm! (Library Hours)
  2. Paper and Pencil - This is a cheap option.  You can take notes on paper.  If you are worried that you will not be able to keep track of your notes, then take pictures of your pages or read them into the voice to text feature on your phone and save the documents in a Google drive,  They will be typed, they will be searchable, and you will be able to organize them in a way that works for you.( Directions for Voice to Text)
  3. Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard and phone - Wireless Bluetooth Keyboards are relatively inexpensive.  A good working keyboard can be purchased from $25 to $50 on Amazon.  That means you can probably purchase one after your first or second work study paycheck!
  • Many of the keyboards come with a phone tray where you can prop your phone so that you can see the screen.
  • The keyboard can also be linked to Wi-Fi enabled television screens to give you a larger screen to work from on collaborative projects.
  • It is very portable, so you can use it to take notes.  Do be sure and clear this with your professor before you utilize this set up.  Phones can be disruptive during instruction so they may ask you to use a paper and pencil method.

A Bluetooth keyboard could be helpful even if you do have a laptop!  It is lighter to travel with than a laptop. If it falls, you are not going to damage the screen like you would a laptop,  Finally, it is a great backup just in case your computer crashes!

We hope these ideas are helpful.  If you need assistance with any of the methods above, feel free to contact the library!
